अयुध्यमानं यस् त्व् आजौ तथा प्रायगतं मुनिम् ॥
छिन्नबाहुं परैर् हन्यात् सात्यके स कथं भवेत् ॥
निहत्य त्वां यदा भूमौ स विक्रामति वीर्यवान् ॥
किं तदा न निहंस्य् एनं भूत्वा पुरुषसत्तमः ॥
त्वया पुनर् अनार्येण पूर्वं पार्थेन निर्जितः ॥
यदा तदा हतः शूरः सौमदत्तिः प्रतापवान् ॥
ayudhyamānaṃ yas tv ājau tathā prāyagataṃ munim ||
chinnabāhuṃ parair hanyāt sātyake sa kathaṃ bhavet ||
nihatya tvāṃ yadā bhūmau sa vikrāmati vīryavān ||
kiṃ tadā na nihaṃsy enaṃ bhūtvā puruṣasattamaḥ ||
tvayā punar anāryeṇa pūrvaṃ pārthena nirjitaḥ ||
yadā tadā hataḥ śūraḥ saumadattiḥ pratāpavān ||
'Who indeed in battle would strike down one not fighting, thus one seated in prayopavesha like a sage, with his arm severed, while restrained by others — o Satyaki, what then is such a man? When he had felled you to the ground and advanced, mighty as he was, why then did you not slay him, proving yourself the best of men? Only after he had first been overcome by Partha [his arm severed] was the mighty hero, son of Somadatta, then struck down by you, unworthy one.'

Dhrishtadyumna drives the point home: when Bhurishravas was overpowering you in fair combat, you could not withstand him — you struck him down only after Arjuna had cut off his arm. It is telling how honest weakness is set against dishonest victory: one defeated in a righteous fight triumphs wrongfully. The verse teaches that a victory won by another's hand over a defenseless man brings no honor; and one who reproaches another for killing the unarmed is especially pitiable if he himself triumphed only over the maimed.
