तेषाम् अपि ह्य् अधर्मेण चेष्टितं शृणु यादृशम् ॥

adharottaram etad dhi yan mā tvaṃ vaktum icchasi ||
atha vakṣyasi māṃ maurkhyād bhūyaḥ paruṣam īdṛśam ||
gamayiṣyāmi bāṇais tvāṃ yudhi vaivasvatakṣayam ||
na caiva mūrkha dharmeṇa kevalenaiva śakyate ||
teṣām api hy adharmeṇa ceṣṭitaṃ śṛṇu yādṛśam ||
"Be silent [calm yourself], you must not revile me again; for this is a quarrel [a dispute over who is worse] that you wish to speak to me. And if you speak to me again out of folly with such harsh words, I will send you with arrows in battle to the abode of Vaivasvata [Yama]. And indeed, O fool, by dharma alone it is not possible [to win]; hear how much unrighteousness has been done by them [the Kauravas] as well."

Dhrishtadyumna cuts off the wrangling and turns to his argument: "by dharma alone one cannot win" -- and points to the Kauravas' own unrighteous deeds. What stands out is the bitter admission: this war has been waged with an admixture of falsehood on both sides. The verse teaches that in a world distorted by enmity, a pure path sometimes remains for no one; but to justify one's own unrighteousness by another's is only to justify the world's fall, not to rise above it.
