As at the end of night, O king, the luminaries [rush] toward the mountain of sunset, so the arrows rushed toward the chariot of Bhimasena. For that Bhima, his chariot, his horses and charioteer, O worthy one, enveloped by the son of Drona, became as if inside fire. As fire, having burned the whole world with the moving and unmoving at the [appointed] time, would enter the mouth of the Lord [Vishnu], so the weapon enveloped Bhima.

The fire enveloping Bhima is likened to the universal flame of the dissolution that, after consuming the world, enters the mouth of Vishnu. It is telling that a warrior's private disaster is raised to a cosmic measure: the destruction of one and the destruction of the world are made equal in the mirror of the image. The verse teaches that every destruction is a reflection of the great dissolution; and the fire threatening Bhima reminds us that the world too will one day enter the mouth of the Lord -- and so support must be sought in the One who remains beyond every conflagration.
