नैतद् आवर्तते राजन्न् अस्त्रं द्विर् नोपपद्यते ॥
आवर्तयन् निहन्त्य् एतत् प्रयोक्तारं न संशयः ॥
एष चास्त्रप्रतीघातं वासुदेवः प्रयुक्तवान् ॥
अन्यथा विहितः संख्ये वधः शत्रोर् जनाधिप ॥
पराजयो वा मृत्युर् वा श्रेयो मृत्युर् न निर्जयः ॥
निर्जिताश् चारयो ह्य् एते शस्त्रोत्सर्गान् मृतोपमाः ॥
naitad āvartate rājann astraṃ dvir nopapadyate ||
āvartayan nihanty etat prayoktāraṃ na saṃśayaḥ ||
eṣa cāstrapratīghātaṃ vāsudevaḥ prayuktavān ||
anyathā vihitaḥ saṃkhye vadhaḥ śatror janādhipa ||
parājayo vā mṛtyur vā śreyo mṛtyur na nirjayaḥ ||
nirjitāś cārayo hy ete śastrotsargān mṛtopamāḥ ||
'This weapon, O king, is not repeated; it cannot be used twice. Whoever repeats it, it kills the one who used it, without doubt. And this repelling of the weapon Vasudeva employed; the destruction of the enemy in battle, O lord of peoples, is ordained otherwise. Defeat or death — death is better, not [inglorious] defeat; and these enemies are conquered — by laying down their weapons, like the dead.'

Ashvatthaman reveals the law of the weapon and Krishna's stratagem that neutralized it: the enemy's destruction is now destined by another path. It is telling how he consoles himself -- those who laid down their weapons are 'like the dead,' as if already defeated. The verse teaches that not every goal can be reached by the desired means; and the wise accept that what is destined will come about by its own path -- finding honor even in an incomplete victory, rather than stooping to the impossible.
