He, first heavily pierced and afterward hard pressed, grew faint in the battle, the Panchalya, and leaned upon his banner. Him, as an elephant torn by a raging lion, O king, five heroic chariot-warriors of the Pandavas swiftly attacked: Kiriti [Arjuna] and Bhimasena, and Vriddhakshatra the Paurava, and the crown prince of Chedi, and Sudarshana the Malava -- with five arrows each they struck him from all sides at once.

Five of the best hurry to the aid of the fainting Dhrishtadyumna, surrounding Ashvatthaman. It is telling that even five together go against one -- a measure of how fearsome the son of Drona has become. The verse teaches that a great threat unites even the scattered; but numbers alone are no guarantee of victory here -- against fate's will and one man's fury, even five may prove powerless, as what follows will show.
