तं दुर्दर्शं गूढम् अनुप्रविष्टं गुहाहितं गह्वरेष्ठं पुराणम् ।
अध्यात्मयोगाधिगमेन देवं मत्वा धीरो हर्षशोकौ जहाति

Here is the first positive instruction about the Ātman — and every word in it is weighed. taṁ durdarśam — "Him, hard to see": not invisible but hard to see: vision is possible, yet it demands the whole man. gūḍham anupraviṣṭam — "secret, entered deep within": the same words with which Naciketas's question was described (verse 29) — the question and the Answerer dwell in one depth. guhāhitam gahvareṣṭham — "laid in the secret place, standing in the abyss": guhā, the cave of the heart, is the running image of the Kaṭha; purāṇam — "ancient": He is older than every "long ago".
adhyātma-yoga-adhigamena — "by realization through the inward yoga": adhyātma-yoga is the gathering of consciousness from the outward to the inward, the turning of the gaze of which vallī 4 will say: "the Self-existent pierced the openings of the senses outward…" Note the word devam — "God": the one hidden in the heart is called not an impersonal principle but a deva, a shining Lord; the meeting in the depth is a meeting with Someone, not with something.
harṣa-śokau jahāti — "he leaves behind joy-and-grief": the dual number ties them into one pair — they are one oscillation, a pendulum swinging between "I got" and "I lost". He who has found the Ancient One in his heart passes not from joy into gloom nor from grief into merriment, but out of the pendulum itself: his joy henceforth has no opposite, for its cause neither comes nor goes.
