ya eṣa supteṣu jāgarti — "he who keeps awake in the sleeping": when everything in a man sleeps — the senses, the mind, the very "I" of daylight consciousness — Someone does not sleep: kāmaṁ kāmaṁ puruṣo nirmimāṇaḥ — "the Puruṣa fashioning desire after desire": out of His wakefulness even the fabric of dreams is woven; dreams are dreamt by His light, as by a lamp that has not been put out. Sleep is a daily proof: the consciousness in me is deeper than "me".
tad eva śukraṁ tad brahma tad evāmṛtam ucyate — "He is the Pure, He is Brahman, He is called the Immortal": three titles in a row, a solemn enthronement; tasmiṁl lokāḥ śritāḥ sarve — "upon Him all the worlds rest" — tad u nātyeti kaścana — "and no one oversteps Him" (the seal from verse 80, which will also clinch the tree in verse 102: the Kaṭha repeats its most important truths three times).
Its neighbourhood with verse 93 is no accident: there, the roads of the sleeping (wombs and posts, by deeds and by knowledge); here, the Wakeful One in whom those roads are laid. Saṁsāra is a sleep beside a lamp that has not been put out; and the way out of the sleep is not into another and better sleep but to Him who has never slept. Death, let us add, is a sleep too (and this is said to Naciketas at death's threshold!): in it too He keeps awake — and therefore the departing man does not fall into nothing but sleeps in the Light.
