By the mind — by that very thing — is this to be grasped: there is here no [self-existent] manifold at all. From death to death goes he who sees here as it were the manifold.

manasaivedam āptavyam — "by the mind is this to be grasped": an unexpected turn after all the warnings about the mind. That very mind which "does not attain" (Kena 1.3, Kaṭha verse 38) is declared the instrument of realization — because a purified, instructed mind (vallī 3 gave it into the intellect's reins) is capable of the main thing: to see the coherence of the world, invisible to the eye. The eye always sees the many; the one Root of the many is seen only by the mind — that is its sacred vocation.
neha nānāsti kiñcana — "there is here no [self-existent] manifold at all": not "things do not exist" but "separateness is not final": nothing stands of itself, all is in Him and by Him (verse 80: "no one oversteps"). The repetition of the verdict from the preceding verse — mṛtyoḥ sa mṛtyuṁ gacchati — makes the pair 81–82 a double blow: first about the seeing, then about the mind; first the diagnosis, then the organ of healing.
For the path of devotion this verse is about seeing everything in connection with the One: the world seen as His energy, His garden, His household, ceases to break up into pieces at which mortality catches. Differences remain — dividedness vanishes; such is the difference between a beggarly jumble and the rich manifoldness of one kingdom.
