Three names are drawn together in the one rising luminary: vaiśvānaraḥ — "belonging to all men", the fire that lives in each (by that same name the Gītā 15.14 calls the digestive fire: ahaṁ vaiśvānaro bhūtvā — "having become Vaiśvānara, I digest the food in the bodies of breathing things"); viśva-rūpaḥ — "of all forms": every form is his vesture; prāṇo 'gnir udayate — "prāṇa, fire, rises".
The equation "sun = fire = prāṇa" is no poetic licence but an exact seeing of one energy on three storeys: in the sky it is the sun, on the altar and the hearth it is fire, in the breast it is breath. Therefore the Vedic man, tending his fire and greeting the sunrise, was doing one and the same thing: honouring the single life by which he himself lives.
tad etad ṛcābhyuktam — "of this it is said in a ṛc": Pippalāda hands the word over to the hymn. So tradition works: instruction leans upon revelation, the teacher's new word upon the eternal word of the Veda; and the next verse will be that hymn.
