The hymn tries the faces of the gods upon prāṇa: indras tvaṁ prāṇa tejasā — "you are Indra — in valour": all the might of the thunderer is the drive of life; rudro 'si — "you are Rudra": the terrible power that rolls up the worlds is also she: life is not tender only — it is thunderstorm too, the heat of fever, the pain that cleanses; parirakṣitā — "the guardian on every side": the same power in a gentle form (saumyena rūpeṇa) keeps and shields.
tvam antarikṣe carasi — "you move in the mid-region": sūryas tvam — "you are the sun", sarveṣāṁ jyotiṣāṁ patiḥ — "the lord of all luminaries". The hymn has come back to the sun with which the first question began (verses 5–8), closing the circle: prāṇa is thunder and storm and light and protection.
The lesson of these identifications: the power is one, the faces many; Indra, Rudra, Sūrya are not rivals but offices of a single Life. One who has grasped this in prāṇa is ready to grasp the same about Him who is above prāṇa: all the gods are "spokes" (verse 22), all the powers are ministries; polytheism is healed not by denying the gods but by recognizing the One whose hands they are.
