विश्वरूपं हरिणं जातवेदसं परायणं ज्योतिर् एकं तपन्तम् ।
सहस्ररश्मिः शतधा वर्तमानः प्राणः प्रजानाम् उदयत्य् एष सूर्यः

The promised hymn — a portrait of the sun in seven epithets. viśva-rūpam — of all forms (in his light every form stands revealed); hariṇam — golden; jātavedasam — "knower of all that is born" (a title of fire: light was present at every birth); parāyaṇam — "the final refuge": to it lives return as rays return at sunset; jyotir ekam — "the one light": luminaries are many, light is one; tapantam — "blazing": bestowing the heat of tapas upon all that lives; sahasra-raśmiḥ śatadhā vartamānaḥ — "thousand-rayed, working in a hundred [ways]": one power, a thousand deliveries.
prāṇaḥ prajānām udayaty eṣa sūryaḥ — "this sun rises, the prāṇa of creatures": the hymn seals the lesson of the opening verses: looking at the sunrise you see not a heavenly body but the rising of Life itself.
For an attentive ear there is more here: the one light, of all forms, the final refuge of all — epithets through which He shines whose energy prāṇa itself is. The Kaṭha (verse 101) said it outright: "everything shines only after Him, the Shining One." The sun is the greatest of symbols — but a symbol: the garment of the Light, not the Light itself; the Upaniṣad teaches us to honour it — and not to halt at it (a distinction that will prove decisive in the verses on the two paths).
