एष ह्य् एनं चाक्षुषं प्राणम् अनुगृह्णानः ।
पृथिव्यां या देवता सैषा पुरुषस्यापानम् अवष्टभ्य ।
अन्तरा यदाकाशः स समानः ।

The body is carried out into the cosmos: every inner breath has a universal double and patron. ādityo ha vai bāhyaḥ prāṇaḥ — "the sun is the outer prāṇa": it is anugṛhṇānaḥ — "graciously upholding" (anu-√grah — the root of the word anugraha, grace!) the prāṇa of the eye: sight lives by the sun not metaphorically — the eye is an organ grown by light and for light. pṛthivyāṁ yā devatā — the deity of the earth holds up apāna: everything descending in us leans upon the gravity and patience of the earth; ākāśaḥ — space — is samāna: the middle equilibrium; vāyuḥ — the wind — is vyāna: circulation.
The sense of the correspondences goes deeper than poetry: a man is not a closed jar of life but a knot of universal currents; the breath in the chest is a local branch of the world's wind, the warmth in the body a subsidiary of the sun. Inner and outer are one life-support system from one Prajāpati; therefore the Vedic man, honouring sun and earth, honoured his own eyes and his own footing — and conversely.
The answer to Kausalya's sixth sub-question ("how does she embrace the outer and the inner?") is given: prāṇa holds both sides because both are her own fabric. What remains is the most personal matter: what happens in the hour when the inner fire goes out — verses 38–39.
