Worth noting is the definition of waking: buddheh purna-vikasa, "full unfolding of the intellect." Vikasa means "unfolding, blossoming" — said of a flower. This image is good and precise: waking is a state in which the mind is unfolded, like a flower by day; in sleep it is closed.
Let us add the argument by which the speaker denies himself waking: vikara-adi-vihinatvat, "by being devoid of change." That is, I do not wake, for I do not change; and unfolding is a change. The argument is consistent, and rests on the six changes discussed when reading the first chapter (1.8): what these six happen to is matter.
The Vaishnava side accepts the argument and applies it likewise: the soul does not change, the mind changes. But it adds a distinction worth stating. There is the change vikara, "transformation of substance," and there is vilasa, "manifestation, play."
The first is a corruption: milk that has become yogurt has ceased to be milk. The second is a revealing: the sun emerging from behind a cloud has not changed. And hence, it says, the absence of change does not mean the absence of action and state: He does not change — and yet He watches, permits, sustains, enjoys; and that list was cited when reading the Jabala-darshana (8.7).
