The first three stages are correlated with waking, and the following ones will be correlated with dream and with the fourth. This construction joins two schemes: the seven stages and the four states; and of the four states, discussed when reading the Mandukya. The sense of the joining is this: at the first three stages, the world still appears real — the person lives in it like anyone, and only his intentions have changed.
This description is, in my view, correct, and is held in Vaishnava practice too, though expressed differently. It says: at first a person both believes and does not believe at once; he goes to the temple and, right there, counts his money, and both occupations are equally real to him. Let us add what deserves noting in the phrase bheda-abheda-yuta, "joined with difference and non-difference."
It is hardly necessary to say this combination is the very name of Vaishnava teaching, discussed when reading the Pranagnihotra (2.9): achintya-bheda-abheda, "inconceivable difference-and-non-difference." Here it is applied to the stages: they are both different and not different, for they pass into one another imperceptibly. And this, incidentally, is a good example that such a combination is not a contradiction: anyone who has observed growth knows the stages of growth are both distinguishable and inseparable from one another.
