Then a great joyful roar rose throughout the whole arena, and instruments with conches sounded everywhere. "This is the glorious son of Kunti, this is the middle Pandava, this is the son of great Indra, this is the protector of the Kurus; this is the best of the knowers of weapons, the best of the upholders of dharma, and among the virtuous — the supreme treasury of character and knowledge." Hearing such incomparable words uttered by the spectators, Kunti's breast grew wet with tears mixed with streaming milk.

Here the pure joy of a mother shows itself. Telling is the wondrous image: at the people's praise of her son, milk bursts from Kunti's breast, mingling with tears — a bodily response of a mother's love beyond words. The scripture bares here the sanctity of motherhood: a mother's love runs so deep that it answers in the very body. Telling too is what Arjuna is praised for: not strength alone, but as "upholder of dharma," "treasury of character and knowledge" — the people value righteousness and character in him above prowess. Thus the scripture shows Arjuna's triumph crowned with the silent tears of a mother's joy; and in this quiet image of love lies a respite before the storm about to break upon the arena.
