"Then Dhaumya and Vyāsa, the great ascetic, anointed him, placing Nārada, Devala, and the sage Asita at the front. Joyful, the great sages attended the anointing, together with Jāmadagnya [Paraśurāma] and others who had crossed over the sea of the Vedas. They approached the great-souled king, performing the rite with mantras and abundant dakṣiṇā, as the Seven Ṛṣis in heaven approach great Indra, lord of the gods. Sātyaki, of true valor, held the parasol over him, while Dhanañjaya and Bhīmasena the Pāṇḍava held the fans."

The greatest sages — Vyāsa, Nārada, Paraśurāma — perform the anointing, while the hero-Pāṇḍavas themselves attend at it. It is telling that the parasol and the fans are held not by servants but by Arjuna and Bhīma: where there is sanctity, even the most valiant count humble service an honor. The verse teaches that no service demeans the great when it is done for a righteous cause: the warrior holding a fan over his brother-king at the bidding of dharma is not lowered but raised. The comparison with Indra and the Seven Ṛṣis shows that the earthly rite echoes the heavenly one; and the gathering of sages around Yudhiṣṭhira is a visible blessing from above on his kingship.
