आगमिष्यति वः क्षिप्रं फलं पापस्य कर्मणः ॥
अधर्मो हि कृतस् तीव्रः कथं स्याद् अफलश् चिरम् ॥
इति तान् प्रति भाषन् वै वैश्यापुत्रो महामतिः ॥
अपायाच् छस्त्रम् उत्सृज्य कोपदुःखसमन्वितः ॥

āgamiṣyati vaḥ kṣipraṃ phalaṃ pāpasya karmaṇaḥ ||
adharmo hi kṛtas tīvraḥ kathaṃ syād aphalaś ciram ||
iti tān prati bhāṣan vai vaiśyāputro mahāmatiḥ ||
apāyāc chastram utsṛjya kopaduḥkhasamanvitaḥ ||

Translation
"'The fruit of an evil deed will soon overtake you: a fierce unrighteousness has been wrought — how could it remain fruitless for long?' Thus answering them, the son of the vaishya woman, most wise, casting away his weapon, went away, seized by wrath and sorrow."

Yuyutsu proclaims the law of retribution: "adharmaḥ kṛtaḥ tīvraḥ kathaṃ syāt aphalaḥ ciram" — a fierce unrighteousness cannot remain without fruit. And his word is backed by action: "śastram utsṛjya apāyāt", he throws down his weapon and leaves — refusing to take part in wrongdoing even at the cost of a break with his own. It is telling that "mahāmatiḥ", "most wise", here is precisely the one who discerned dharma and chose it over kinship. The verse teaches that faith in the inevitability of the fruit of deeds (karma) gives rise not to passivity but to resolve: one who recognizes unrighteousness departs from it in deed, not merely in word.
