तेषां तु भैक्षं प्रतिगृह्य कृष्णा; कृत्वा बलिं ब्राह्मणसाच् च कृत्वा ॥
तां चैव वृद्धां परिविष्य तांश् च; नरप्रवीरान् स्वयम् अप्य् अभुङ्क्त ॥
सुप्तास् तु ते पार्थिव सर्व एव; कृष्णा तु तेषां चरणोपधानम् ॥
आसीत् पृथिव्यां शयनं च तेषां; दर्भाजिनाग्र्यास्तरणोपपन्नम् ॥
teṣāṃ tu bhaikṣaṃ pratigṛhya kṛṣṇā; kṛtvā baliṃ brāhmaṇasāc ca kṛtvā ||
tāṃ caiva vṛddhāṃ pariviṣya tāṃś ca; narapravīrān svayam apy abhuṅkta ||
suptās tu te pārthiva sarva eva; kṛṣṇā tu teṣāṃ caraṇopadhānam ||
āsīt pṛthivyāṃ śayanaṃ ca teṣāṃ; darbhājināgryāstaraṇopapannam ||
"Having received their alms, Krishna, having performed the bali offering and set apart a portion for the brahmins, having served that elder woman and those hero-men, herself ate as well; then they all slept, O king, and Krishna was at their feet, and their bed was on the ground, spread with darbha grass and hides."

Here the princess serves humbly, as a devoted wife (pativrata). It is significant that Draupadi first honors the gods, the brahmins, and the elders, waits upon the men, and only then eats herself: from the very first day the new wife is a model of service and humility. True dignity reveals itself in service, not in honor received. Thus the scripture shows Draupadi's virtuous conduct; and her uncomplaining service amid poverty is worth more than any greatness.
