"They, thundering like the clouds of doom, carried on various tales -- not of the vaishya-and-shudra kind, nor of brahmin talk, but [of war]: without doubt these are bull-like kshatriyas, for they speak of war, O king. Clearly this hope of ours has come true: we hear that the Parthas have escaped the fire. By how powerfully the mark was struck and the bow strung, and by how they converse -- surely these are the hidden Parthas dwelling here."

Here the son discerns the truth through reasoned inference. It is significant that Dhrishtadyumna concludes not at random but by signs: by their speech -- kshatriyas; by rumor -- the Pandavas survived; by their strength and conversation -- it is they. Here is the gift of discernment, joining observation with reason. Thus the scripture shows how truth opens itself to the attentive; and Dhrishtadyumna's guess, resting on evidence, comes close to certainty.
