Yudhishthira said: "If I am an authority for you, listen to my word, o blameless one; whatever unpleasant thing you did to me when you entered, all that I forgive, and there is no offense in my heart; for the entrance of an elder into a junior's place is no violation -- it is only the entrance of a junior into an elder's place that violates the rule."

Here the elder brother magnanimously opens a loophole for his brother. It is significant that Yudhishthira interprets the vow so as to excuse Arjuna: one who loves seeks to forgive, not to condemn. Here is the elder's indulgence, ready to forgive out of love. Thus the scripture shows Yudhishthira's mercy; but Arjuna will not accept a leniency that offends the truth.
