ते निवृत्य पुनः पार्थं सर्वतः पर्यवारयन् ॥
रणे सपत्नान् निघ्नन्तं जिगीषन्तन् परान् युधि ॥
तेषाम् आपततां तूर्णं गाण्डीवप्रेषितैः शरैः ॥
शिरांसि पातयाम् आस बाहूंश् चैव धनंजयः ॥
शिरोभिः पतितैस् तत्र भूमिर् आसीन् निरन्तरा ॥
अभ्रच्छायेव चैवासीद् ध्वाङ्क्षगृध्रवडैर्युधि ॥
te nivṛtya punaḥ pārthaṃ sarvataḥ paryavārayan ||
raṇe sapatnān nighnantaṃ jigīṣantan parān yudhi ||
teṣām āpatatāṃ tūrṇaṃ gāṇḍīvapreṣitaiḥ śaraiḥ ||
śirāṃsi pātayām āsa bāhūṃś caiva dhanaṃjayaḥ ||
śirobhiḥ patitais tatra bhūmir āsīn nirantarā ||
abhracchāyeva caivāsīd dhvāṅkṣagṛdhravaḍairyudhi ||
They, having turned back, again surrounded Partha on all sides, as he slew rivals in battle, longing to conquer his foes in the fray. Them, as they bore down upon him swiftly, Dhananjaya, with arrows sped from the Gandiva, felled -- heads and arms. With heads fallen there the earth was entirely covered; and there was a shadow, as of a cloud, [from] crows, vultures, and herons over the battle.

"Abhracchāyā iva... dhvāṅkṣagṛdhravaḍaiḥ," "a shadow as of a cloud, from crows, vultures, and herons" -- the sky darkens with scavengers gathered to the feast of death. The grim image crowns the mountain of severed heads. Telling is it that the poem shows not glory but its price -- clouds of carrion-birds over the field. The verse teaches a sober view of battle: triumph over an enemy turns into a feast for scavengers, and the shadow of their wings blots out the sun; whoever sees that shadow will not crave war, but will grasp how dark is the fruit of unrighteousness that gathers such a harvest.
