तयोः पदानुगान् हत्वा पुनः पञ्चशतान् रथान् ॥
अभ्यगाद् भारतीं सेनां निघ्नन् पार्थो वरान् वरान् ॥
श्रुतायुषं च निहतं प्रेक्ष्य चैवाच्युतायुषम् ॥
अयुतायुश् च संक्रुद्धो दीर्घायुश् चैव भारत ॥
पुत्रौ तयोर् नरश्रेष्ठौ कौन्तेयं प्रतिजग्मतुः ॥
किरन्तौ विविधान् बाणान् पितृव्यसनकर्शितौ ॥

abhyagād bhāratīṃ senāṃ nighnan pārtho varān varān ||

putrau tayor naraśreṣṭhau kaunteyaṃ pratijagmatuḥ ||
kirantau vividhān bāṇān pitṛvyasanakarśitau ||
Having slain their followers, and again five hundred chariots, Partha rushed into the army of the Bharatas, slaying the finest of the finest. And seeing Shrutayus slain and Achyutayus too, Ayutayus, enraged, and Dirghayus, O Bharata -- the sons of those two, foremost among men -- went against the son of Kunti, scattering various arrows, stricken by the calamity of their fathers.

The sons of the fallen, "pitṛvyasanakarśitau," stricken by the calamity of their fathers, go against Arjuna -- to avenge and to perish in their turn. Thus does untruth breed a cycle of vengeance and death from generation to generation. Telling is it that grief for their fathers leads them not to reflection but to the same destruction. The verse teaches that enmity not cut short by dharma is inherited: sons repeat the path of their fathers, and blood calls to blood; only truth could break this circle, but, blinded by grief, they rush along it again, multiplying the sorrow of their line.
