अम्बष्ठस् तु गदां गृह्य क्रोधपर्याकुलेक्षणः ॥
आससाद रणे पार्थं केशवं च महारथम् ॥
ततः स प्रहसन् वीरो गदाम् उद्यम्य भारत ॥
रथम् आवार्य गदया केशवं समताडयत् ॥
गदया ताडितं दृष्ट्वा केशवं परवीरहा ॥
अर्जुनो भृशसंक्रुद्धः सो ऽम्बष्ठं प्रति भारत ॥
ambaṣṭhas tu gadāṃ gṛhya krodhaparyākulekṣaṇaḥ ||
āsasāda raṇe pārthaṃ keśavaṃ ca mahāratham ||
tataḥ sa prahasan vīro gadām udyamya bhārata ||
ratham āvārya gadayā keśavaṃ samatāḍayat ||
gadayā tāḍitaṃ dṛṣṭvā keśavaṃ paravīrahā ||
arjuno bhṛśasaṃkruddhaḥ so 'mbaṣṭhaṃ prati bhārata ||
Ambashtha, taking up his mace, his eyes clouded by rage, advanced in battle upon Partha and Keshava the great warrior. Then that hero, laughing, O Bharata, raised his mace and, shielding his chariot with it, struck Keshava. Seeing Keshava struck with the mace, Arjuna, the slayer of enemy heroes, turned upon Ambashtha in fierce wrath, O Bharata.

The blow against Keshava kindles Arjuna more fiercely than anything else: "keśavaṃ tāḍitaṃ dṛṣṭvā... bhṛśasaṃkruddhaḥ." An insult to the Lord is harder for the devotee to bear than a wound to himself. It is telling that Arjuna's anger flares not for his own sake but for his Divine Friend. The verse teaches that the devotee is wounded most deeply by an offense against the Lord: blows to himself he endures, but at an insult to God he blazes with righteous anger; and love for the Lord makes an affront to Him weigh heavier than any injury to oneself -- for one who loves holds the Beloved's honor dearer than his own life.
