शोणितं निर्वमन्ति स्म द्विपाः पार्थशराहताः ॥
सहस्रशश् छिन्नगात्राः सारोहाः सपदानुगाः ॥
चुक्रुशुश् च निपेतुश् च बभ्रमुश् चापरे दिशः ॥
भृशं त्रस्ताश् च बहुधा स्वानेन ममृदुर् गजाः ॥
सान्तरायुधिका मत्ता द्विपास् तीक्ष्णविषोपमाः ॥
śoṇitaṃ nirvamanti sma dvipāḥ pārthaśarāhatāḥ ||
sahasraśaś chinnagātrāḥ sārohāḥ sapadānugāḥ ||
cukruśuś ca nipetuś ca babhramuś cāpare diśaḥ ||
bhṛśaṃ trastāś ca bahudhā svānena mamṛdur gajāḥ ||
sāntarāyudhikā mattā dvipās tīkṣṇaviṣopamāḥ ||
Disgorging blood, elephants struck by the arrows of Partha, by the thousands, with bodies cut open, with their riders and attendants, cried out and fell, and others rushed about in all directions. Extremely frightened, in great numbers, the elephants, with their trampling, crushed their own.

'Svānena mamṛduḥ gajāḥ,' 'the elephants trampled their own': maddened by wounds and fear, they destroy their own army. Thus panic turns strength against itself. It is telling that might stripped of order becomes self-destroying. The verse teaches that in confusion strength turns to ruin for its bearer: frightened elephants trample their own, just as an unrighteous army, losing formation and spirit, destroys itself; and chaos born of fear is more terrible than the enemy, for it turns weapon and strength against those they were meant to serve.
