पाण्डवं भृशसंक्रुद्धाव् अर्दयाम् आसतुः शरैः ॥
तयोस् तु भृशसंक्रुद्धः शराभ्यां पाण्डुनन्दनः ॥
चिच्छेद धनुषी तूर्णं भूय एव धनंजयः ॥
tayos tu dhanuṣī citre bhallābhyāṃ śvetavāhanaḥ ||
ciccheda samare tūrṇaṃ dhvajau ca kanakojjvalau ||
athānye dhanuṣī rājan pragṛhya samare tadā ||
pāṇḍavaṃ bhṛśasaṃkruddhāv ardayām āsatuḥ śaraiḥ ||
tayos tu bhṛśasaṃkruddhaḥ śarābhyāṃ pāṇḍunandanaḥ ||
ciccheda dhanuṣī tūrṇaṃ bhūya eva dhanaṃjayaḥ ||
Their two ornate bows the white-horsed one swiftly cut in the battle with two bhalla-arrows, and their two banners, blazing with gold. Then, taking up two other bows in the battle, they, in fierce anger, pressed the Pandava with arrows. At them, in fierce anger, the joy of Pandu, Dhananjaya, again swiftly cut their bows with two arrows.

The exchange of blows with the brothers follows a familiar pattern: a bow is cut — another is taken up — it is cut again. Arjuna patiently overcomes the persistence of the two, without turning aside from his main goal. His composure, despite his weary horses, is significant. The verse teaches that one true to his purpose does not lose patience over obstacles: even worn out, he methodically clears them away; and concentration on the essential — on the vow — keeps him steady where another would break into fury or despair.
