ततो जनार्दनः संख्ये प्रियं पुरुषसत्तमम् ॥
असंभ्रान्तो महाबाहुर् अर्जुनं वाक्यम् अब्रवीत् ॥
उदपानम् इहाश्वानां नालम् अस्ति रणे ऽर्जुन ॥
परीप्सन्ते जलं चेमे पेयं न त्व् अवगाहनम् ॥
इदम् अस्तीत्य् असंभ्रान्तो ब्रुवन्न् अस्त्रेण मेदिनीम् ॥
अभिहत्यार्जुनश् चक्रे वाजिपानं सरः शुभम् ॥
tato janārdanaḥ saṃkhye priyaṃ puruṣasattamam ||
asaṃbhrānto mahābāhur arjunaṃ vākyam abravīt ||
udapānam ihāśvānāṃ nālam asti raṇe 'rjuna ||
parīpsante jalaṃ ceme peyaṃ na tv avagāhanam ||
idam astīty asaṃbhrānto bruvann astreṇa medinīm ||
abhihatyārjunaś cakre vājipānaṃ saraḥ śubham ||
Then Janardana, in the fight, unshaken, mighty-armed, spoke a word to his beloved friend, the best of men, Arjuna: "There is no well here for the horses, none at all in this battle, Arjuna; and these horses long for water to drink, not to bathe in." "This is here," said Arjuna, unshaken, and striking the earth with his weapon, he made a fair lake for the horses to drink from.

The miracle is born of care: for the sake of the thirsting horses, Arjuna, "astreṇa medinīm abhihatya" -- striking the earth with his weapon -- brings forth a lake. The Lord pointed out the need; the devotee worked the wonder. It is telling that celestial weaponry here is not used for killing but for mercy -- to give the horses drink. The verse teaches that supreme power finds its truest glory in mercy: the weapon that fells enemies becomes a source of water for the thirsty; and a miracle born of compassion for the voiceless is greater than any miracle of destruction.
