शरार्दिताश् च ग्लानाश् च हया दूरे च सैन्धवः ॥
किम् इहानन्तरं कार्यं ज्यायिष्ठं तव रोचते ॥
ब्रूहि कृष्ण यथातत्त्वं त्वं हि प्राज्ञतमः सदा ॥
भवन्नेत्रा रणे शत्रून् विजेष्यन्तीह पाण्डवाः ॥
मम त्व् अनन्तरं कृत्यं यद् वै तत् संनिबोध मे ॥
हयान् विमुच्य हि सुखं विशल्यान् कुरु माधव ॥
śarārditāś ca glānāś ca hayā dūre ca saindhavaḥ ||
kim ihānantaraṃ kāryaṃ jyāyiṣṭhaṃ tava rocate ||
brūhi kṛṣṇa yathātattvaṃ tvaṃ hi prājñatamaḥ sadā ||
bhavannetrā raṇe śatrūn vijeṣyantīha pāṇḍavāḥ ||
mama tv anantaraṃ kṛtyaṃ yad vai tat saṃnibodha me ||
hayān vimucya hi sukhaṃ viśalyān kuru mādhava ||
[Arjuna:] "The horses are worn by arrows and exhausted, and the Sindhu king is far off; what should be done here next -- what seems best to you? Speak, Krishna, as it truly is, for you are ever the wisest; with you as guide, the Pandavas will conquer their enemies here in battle. As for my own next task -- whatever it may be -- learn it from me: unyoke the horses and give them ease, draw out the arrows and make them whole, O Madhava."

Even Arjuna, the greatest of warriors, asks Krishna: "brūhi... tvaṃ hi prājñatamaḥ" -- "speak, for you are the wisest." And he is concerned for the horses: to unyoke them, give them rest, draw out the arrows. It is telling that these two things stand together -- humility before the wisdom of God and mercy toward animals. The verse teaches that even the mightiest ought to seek the Lord's counsel, and that care should extend to the voiceless: the devotee does not rely on his own judgment but entrusts himself to God's wisdom; and his greatness does not keep him from bending over wounded horses -- for true valor is compassionate.
