संजय उवाच
एवम् उक्त्वार्जुनो बाणान् अभिमन्त्र्य व्यकर्षयत् ॥
विकृष्यमाणांस् तेनैवं धनुर्मध्यगताञ् शरान् ॥
तान् अस्यास्त्रेण चिच्छेद द्रौणिः सर्वास्त्रघातिना ॥
तान् निकृत्तान् इषून् दृष्ट्वा दूरतो ब्रह्मवादिना ॥
न्यवेदयत् केशवाय विस्मितः श्वेतवाहनः ॥
नैतद् अस्त्रं मया शक्यं द्विः प्रयोक्तुं जनार्दन ॥
अस्त्रं माम् एव हन्याद् धि पश्य त्व् अद्य बलं मम ॥

evam uktvārjuno bāṇān abhimantrya vyakarṣayat ||
vikṛṣyamāṇāṃs tenaivaṃ dhanurmadhyagatāñ śarān ||
tān asyāstreṇa ciccheda drauṇiḥ sarvāstraghātinā ||
tān nikṛttān iṣūn dṛṣṭvā dūrato brahmavādinā ||
nyavedayat keśavāya vismitaḥ śvetavāhanaḥ ||
naitad astraṃ mayā śakyaṃ dviḥ prayoktuṃ janārdana ||
astraṃ mām eva hanyād dhi paśya tv adya balaṃ mama ||
Having thus spoken, Arjuna, consecrating his arrows with mantra, drew the bow; but the arrows he thus drew, aimed at the middle of the bow, the knower of Brahman [Drona] severed from afar. Seeing those severed arrows, the astonished White-Horsed one reported to Keshava: "This weapon, Janardana, I cannot use twice — it would strike me down myself; but behold now my strength [in another way]."

Even the weapon consecrated by mantra is cut down from afar by "brahmavādī" Drona — might meets might, and Arjuna does not stubbornly persist: "na... dviḥ prayoktum", for a weapon wrongly employed "mām eva hanyāt", turns back upon the one who loosed it. It is significant that the greatest of archers shows humility, knowing the limit of his means and seeking another way. The verse teaches that even the greatest power demands discernment, and the wise withdraw from a perilous method, turning instead to the valor of the hand itself.
