तेन शब्देन महता पूरितेयं वसुंधरा ॥
सशैला सार्णवद्वीपा सपाताला विशां पते ॥
स शब्दो भरतश्रेष्ठ व्याप्य सर्वा दिशो दश ॥
प्रतिसस्वान तत्रैव कुरुपाण्डवयोर् बले ॥
तावका रथिनस् तत्र दृष्ट्वा कृष्णधनंजयौ ॥
संरम्भं परमं प्राप्तास् त्वरमाणा महारथाः ॥
अथ कृष्णौ महाभागौ तावका दृश्य दंशितौ ॥
अभ्यद्रवन्त संक्रुद्धास् तद् अद्भुतम् इवाभवत् ॥
tena śabdena mahatā pūriteyaṃ vasuṃdharā ||
saśailā sārṇavadvīpā sapātālā viśāṃ pate ||
sa śabdo bharataśreṣṭha vyāpya sarvā diśo daśa ||
pratisasvāna tatraiva kurupāṇḍavayor bale ||
tāvakā rathinas tatra dṛṣṭvā kṛṣṇadhanaṃjayau ||
saṃrambhaṃ paramaṃ prāptās tvaramāṇā mahārathāḥ ||
atha kṛṣṇau mahābhāgau tāvakā dṛśya daṃśitau ||
abhyadravanta saṃkruddhās tad adbhutam ivābhavat ||
With that great sound this earth was filled — with its mountains, oceans and islands, with its netherworlds, O lord of the people. That sound, O best of the Bharatas, having spread through all the ten directions, resounded there in the armies of the Kurus and Pandavas. Your chariot-warriors there, seeing Krishna and Dhananjaya, fell into the utmost fury — hastening, mighty warriors that they were. And then, seeing the two illustrious Krishnas clad in armor, your men rushed at them, enraged — and this became like a wonder.

The sound of the conches fills the whole earth — "saśailā sārṇavadvīpā sapātālā" — the echo proclaims not one battle alone, but the shaking of all worlds. "Tat adbhutam iva abhavat" — something like a wonder: men in blind fury rush toward the very place of their own destruction, for "saṃrambham paramam" blinds their reason. It is significant that rage drives men to meet their fate, mistaking it for courage. The verse teaches that when passion supplants judgment, a man himself hastens toward his own end, and the sight of this is a sorrowful marvel.
