तं कृच्छ्राम् आपदं प्राप्तं दृष्ट्वा परमधन्विनः ॥
समापेतुः परीप्सन्तो धनंजयशरार्दितम् ॥
ते रथैर् बहुसाहस्रैः कल्पितैः कुञ्जरैर् हयैः ॥
पदात्योघैश् च संरब्धैः परिवव्रुर् धनंजयम् ॥
अथ नार्जुनगोविन्दौ रथो वापि व्यदृश्यत ॥
अस्त्रवर्षेण महता जनौघैश् चापि संवृतौ ॥
taṃ kṛcchrām āpadaṃ prāptaṃ dṛṣṭvā paramadhanvinaḥ ||
samāpetuḥ parīpsanto dhanaṃjayaśarārditam ||
te rathair bahusāhasraiḥ kalpitaiḥ kuñjarair hayaiḥ ||
padātyoghaiś ca saṃrabdhaiḥ parivavrur dhanaṃjayam ||
atha nārjunagovindau ratho vāpi vyadṛśyata ||
astravarṣeṇa mahatā janaughaiś cāpi saṃvṛtau ||
Seeing him fallen into grievous distress, tormented by Dhananjaya's arrows, the greatest archers rushed together, desiring to save him. With many thousands of chariots equipped with elephants and horses, and with furious throngs of infantry, they surrounded Dhananjaya. And then neither Arjuna nor Govinda, nor even their chariot, could be seen — under the great rain of weapons, hidden by throngs of people.

To rescue one man, "paramadhanvinaḥ", the greatest archers, gather with thousands of chariots, elephants and foot — a disproportion that betrays whom they truly fear here. "Na... vyadṛśyata" — the two Krishnas are hidden by the rain of arrows as the sun by a cloud; the seeming defeat of the Lord is but a veil over an outcome that cannot be undone. It is significant that a multitude musters where the valor of the few would otherwise prevail. The verse teaches that the apparent eclipsing of the light does not extinguish it, and behind the cloud of arrows abides the unconquerable one.
