प्रगृह्य तु ततः खड्गं जलसंधो महाबलः ॥
आर्षभं चर्म च महच् छतचन्द्रम् अलंकृतम् ॥
तत आविध्य तं खड्गं सात्वतायोत्ससर्ज ह ॥
शैनेयस्य धनुश् छित्त्वा स खड्गो न्यपतन् महीम् ॥
अलातचक्रवच् चैव व्यरोचत महीं गतः ॥
अथान्यद् धनुर् आदाय सर्वकायावदारणम् ॥
शालस्कन्धप्रतीकाशम् इन्द्राशनिसमस्वनम् ॥
विस्फार्य विव्यधे क्रुद्धो जलसंधं शरेण ह ॥
pragṛhya tu tataḥ khaḍgaṃ jalasaṃdho mahābalaḥ ||
ārṣabhaṃ carma ca mahac chatacandram alaṃkṛtam ||
tata āvidhya taṃ khaḍgaṃ sātvatāyotsasarja ha ||
śaineyasya dhanuś chittvā sa khaḍgo nyapatan mahīm ||
alātacakravac caiva vyarocata mahīṃ gataḥ ||
athānyad dhanur ādāya sarvakāyāvadāraṇam ||
śālaskandhapratīkāśam indrāśanisamasvanam ||
visphārya vivyadhe kruddho jalasaṃdhaṃ śareṇa ha ||
Then, seizing a sword, Jalasandha, of great might, and a great shield adorned with a hundred moons, cut through Shaineya's bow; but that sword fell to the ground and, like a wheel of fire, shone as it landed there. Then, taking up another bow — one that could cleave through any body, resembling the trunk of a shala tree, sounding like the thunderbolt of Indra...

Jalasandha's sword, having cut through the bow, still falls and fades on the ground, "alātacakravat" — like a dying wheel of fire: his triumph is fleeting. And Satyaki at once takes up a new bow. It is telling that the enemy's brief triumph is met by unfailing endurance. The verse teaches that a fleeting stroke of fortune does not decide the outcome against the tireless: one who does not fold at a first loss cannot be broken by an enemy's chance success, for persistence outlasts a flash.
