'...the northerners and Kritavarman, Purumitra, Shrutarpana, Duhshasana and Nikumbha, Kundabhedi, Urukrama — these will follow you, sixty thousand foot soldiers. Kill Bhima and both twins, and King Dharma, O uncle, as the king of the gods slays the asuras; my hope for victory rests in you. Those torn by Drauni's arrows, their bodies cruelly mangled — kill them, uncle, the sons of Kunti, as the son of Fire slays the asuras.'

Duryodhana places his hope in Shakuni — the very instigator of the whole feud through gambling — and sends him now against those he once deceived. It is telling that the treacherous gambler is dispatched as a commander: falsehood entrusts its cause to falsehood. The verse teaches that hope placed in a sower of discord stands on unstable ground; and one who sends a deceiver to finish off the deceived only closes a circle that dishonest play first opened.
