Then, with a thousand chariots, three hundred elephants, and six thousand horses, Bhima approached that place. Then the righteous Drauni, untiring in his deeds, engaged in battle the son of Bhima — the rakshasa [Ghatotkacha] — and Dhrishtadyumna with his retinue. There Drauni displayed the most wondrous valor, impossible for anyone else among all beings, O Bharata: in the space of a single blink of an eye, he destroyed with sharp arrows an entire akshauhini of rakshasas together with their horses, charioteers, chariots, and elephants.

In an instant Ashvatthaman destroys an entire akshauhini of rakshasas — a valor impossible for anyone else: the summit of his aristeia. It is telling that he is called dharmatma, righteous, even in this terrible deed: the poet calls him righteous because he fights out of duty. The verse teaches that valor can reach superhuman measure; but even the greatest slaughter, accomplished in the blink of an eye, is a mountain of the dead — and its glory is bitter in its cost.
