स तयाभिहतो भीमश् चकम्पे च मुमोह च ॥
प्राप्य चेतश् च बलवान् गदाम् अस्मै ससर्ज ह ॥
सा पाण्डवेन प्रहिता बाह्लीकस्य शिरो ऽहरत् ॥
स पपात हतः पृथ्व्यां वज्राहत इवाद्रिराट् ॥
तस्मिन् विनिहते वीरे बाह्लीके पुरुषर्षभे ॥
पुत्रास् ते ऽभ्यर्दयन् भीमं दश दाशरथेः समाः ॥
sa tayābhihato bhīmaś cakampe ca mumoha ca ||
prāpya cetaś ca balavān gadām asmai sasarja ha ||
sā pāṇḍavena prahitā bāhlīkasya śiro 'harat ||
sa papāta hataḥ pṛthvyāṃ vajrāhata ivādrirāṭ ||
tasmin vinihate vīre bāhlīke puruṣarṣabhe ||
putrās te 'bhyardayan bhīmaṃ daśa dāśaratheḥ samāḥ ||
Struck by it [the lance], Bhima shuddered and lost consciousness; having regained his senses, the mighty one hurled a mace at him. Loosed by the Pandava, it carried away Bahlika's head; he fell slain to the earth like a mountain lord struck by the thunderbolt. When that hero Bahlika, bull among men, was slain, your ten sons, equal to the sons of Dasharatha, pressed hard upon Bhima.

Even Bhima is stunned into unconsciousness for a moment by the blow — but on waking he immediately slays his foe: steadfastness lies in rising after a fall. Tellingly, the old Bahlika falls "like a mountain struck by the thunderbolt" — a majestic death for a worthy man. The verse teaches that the measure of a warrior is not that he is never struck down but that he rises again; and one who, stunned, regains himself and strikes reveals unbreakable spirit.
