अम्बष्ठान् मालवाञ् शूरांस् त्रिगर्तान् सशिबीन् अपि ॥
प्राहिणोन् मृत्युलोकाय गणान् युद्धे युधिष्ठिरः ॥
अभीषाहाञ् शूरसेनान् बाह्लीकान् सवसातिकान् ॥
निकृत्य पृथिवीं राजा चक्रे शोणितकर्दमाम् ॥
यौधेयारट्टराजन्यमद्रकाणां गणान् युधि ॥
प्राहिणोन् मृत्युलोकाय शूरान् बाणैर् युधिष्ठिरः ॥
हताहरत गृह्णीत विध्यत व्यवकृन्तत ॥
इत्य् आसीत् तुमुलः शब्दो युधिष्ठिररथं प्रति ॥

prāhiṇon mṛtyulokāya gaṇān yuddhe yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ||
abhīṣāhāñ śūrasenān bāhlīkān savasātikān ||
nikṛtya pṛthivīṃ rājā cakre śoṇitakardamām ||
yaudheyāraṭṭarājanyamadrakāṇāṃ gaṇān yudhi ||
prāhiṇon mṛtyulokāya śūrān bāṇair yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ||
hatāharata gṛhṇīta vidhyata vyavakṛntata ||
ity āsīt tumulaḥ śabdo yudhiṣṭhirarathaṃ prati ||
The Ambashthas, Malavas, the brave, the Trigartas and those with the Shibis — those hosts in battle Yudhishthira sent to the world of death. Having cut down the Abhishahas, Shurasenas, Bahlikas, and those with the Vasatis, the king made the earth muddy with blood. The hosts of the Yaudheyas, Arattas, Rajanyas, and Madrakas — the brave among them — Yudhishthira sent to the world of death with his arrows. "Strike! Drag! Seize! Pierce! Hack them apart!" — such was the tumultuous din around Yudhishthira's chariot.

The gentle Yudhishthira, king of dharma, in his wrath turns the earth to bloody mud, annihilating whole peoples: the anger of the long-suffering is all the more terrible. Tellingly, the cries of slaughter rage around him — even the righteous cannot stand apart from war's horror once in it. The verse teaches that war draws even the gentlest into bloodshed; and one least inclined to violence, once enraged on the battlefield, strikes no less fiercely than the savage.
