स होवाच प्रजापतिः स यो ह वै सावित्र्यस्याष्टाक्षरं पदं श्रियाभिषिक्तं तत्साम्नोऽङ्गं वेद श्रिया हैवाभिषिच्यते । सर्वे वेदाः प्रणवादिकास्तं प्रणवं तत्साम्नोऽङ्गं वेद स त्रींल्लोकाञ्जयति चतुर्विंशत्यक्षरा महालक्ष्मीर्यजुस्तत्साम्नोऽङ्गं वेद स आयुर्यशःकीर्तिज्ञानैश्वैर्यवान्भवति । तस्मादिदं साङ्गं साम जानीयाद्यो जानीते सोऽमृतत्वं च गच्छति

Prajāpati said: “Who knows as a limb of this chant the eight-syllable word of Sāvitrī, anointed with prosperity, he too is anointed with prosperity. All the Vedas begin with the praṇava; who knows the praṇava as its limb conquers the three worlds. The twenty-four-syllable Mahālakṣmī yajus — who knows it as its limb obtains lifespan, renown, fame, knowledge and lordship. Therefore let him know this chant with all its limbs; who knows attains immortality.”

The answer to the question about the limbs: they are three, and each is a mantra in its own right.
The Sāvitrī, of eight syllables; the praṇava, the syllable Oṁ; the Mahālakṣmī yajus, of twenty-four syllables. The fourth, the gāyatrī of Nṛsiṃha, will be named in the second Upaniṣad.
Note that beside each limb its own fruit is named, and these fruits are entirely earthly: prosperity, the three worlds, long life, fame, lordship.
The book is not ashamed of this and does not postpone the talk of fruits. We saw the same sobriety at the end of the pūrva-tāpanī of the Rāma-tāpanī and in the thirteenth verse of the Kaivalya, where lordship and the heavens stood in one list with kaivalya.
And each time the list ends the same way: “who knows attains immortality”.
This order is worth keeping. First what a man wants; then what he does not yet know how to want. The first is not declared false — it is declared incomplete.
