The twenty-eighth name is the sun.
In Vedic literature it is not one of the luminaries but the chief visible likeness of the Highest: to it the Gāyatrī is addressed, of it the Īśā Upaniṣad speaks in its dying prayer.
In this book the sun has stood twice already: in the eighth paragraph of the first Upaniṣad, where “the golden Puruṣa within the sun” was the second quarter of the chant, and in the eighth paragraph of this Upaniṣad, where the eight-syllable Sāvitrī proved a solar utterance.
Now it is named outright.
Note that with Nṛsiṃha the sun has a special sense as well. He came out of the pillar at sunset — at the hour that is neither day nor night; and the first thing the descriptions say of Him is heat.
