The twenty-ninth name is soma: the moon and at the same time the juice of the sacrificial plant with which in antiquity libations were poured to the gods.
Both meanings live in the word inseparably, and both lead to one thing: soma is what quenches and what grows.
Paired with the previous name comes the everlasting pair: sun and moon, the burning and the quenching.
We read this pair in the eighth paragraph of the first Upaniṣad, where fire, sun and moon were laid on three quarters of the chant; and in the sixth verse of the fourth Upaniṣad of the pūrva-tāpanī of the Rāma-tāpanī, where the world was called “made of fire and soma”.
Note that tradition links the moon with the mind and the sun with the eye. Hence these two names, set side by side, cover both the outer light and the inner.
