वसिष्ठ उवाच
शृणोमि ते रवं भद्रे विनदन्त्याः पुनः पुनः ॥
बलाद् ध्रियसि मे नन्दि क्षमावान् ब्राह्मणो ह्य् अहम् ॥

Here the master hears the cry of the devoted one, yet shows patience. It is significant that Vasishtha does not deny her distress -- "by force they lead you away" -- yet does not answer it with violence: "I am a patient brahmin." Here appears the seeming slowness of the master that tests and reveals the higher dharma: he does not depart from meekness even for the sake of what is dear to him. Thus the scripture shows that the saint's patience is not indifference -- and Vasishtha's apparent inaction conceals fidelity to a law stronger than violence.
