गौर् उवाच
किं नु त्यक्तास्मि भगवन् यद् एवं मां प्रभाषसे ॥
अत्यक्ताहं त्वया ब्रह्मन् न शक्या नयितुं बलात् ॥
वसिष्ठ उवाच
न त्वां त्यजामि कल्याणि स्थीयतां यदि शक्यते ॥
दृढेन दाम्ना बद्ध्वैष वत्सस् ते ह्रियते बलात् ॥
gaur uvāca
kiṃ nu tyaktāsmi bhagavan yad evaṃ māṃ prabhāṣase ||
atyaktāhaṃ tvayā brahman na śakyā nayituṃ balāt ||
vasiṣṭha uvāca
na tvāṃ tyajāmi kalyāṇi sthīyatāṃ yadi śakyate ||
dṛḍhena dāmnā baddhvaiṣa vatsas te hriyate balāt ||
The cow said: "Am I then abandoned, lord, that you speak to me so? If I am not abandoned by you, O brahmin, I cannot be led away by force." Vasishtha said: "I do not abandon you, O auspicious one; remain, if you can; see, having bound your calf with a strong rope, they are leading it away by force."

Here is disclosed the secret of a devotee's strength -- it lies in not being forsaken by the master. Telling is the cow's word: "if I am not abandoned by you, I cannot be led away by force" -- so long as the bond with the master lives, the devotee is unconquerable. Here is a deep truth: one not forsaken by the Lord cannot be seized by evil; protection lies in that very non-abandonment. Telling too is Vasishtha's answer: "I do not abandon you; remain, if you can" -- he grants her both permission and the strength to resist. Thus scripture shows that the devotee's might lies in faithfulness and the master's blessing.
