गन्धर्व उवाच
कल्माषपाद इत्य् अस्मिंल् लोके राजा बभूव ह ॥
इक्ष्वाकुवंशजः पार्थ तेजसासदृशो भुवि ॥
स कदा चिद् वनं राजा मृगयां निर्ययौ पुरात् ॥
मृगान् विध्यन् वराहांश् च चचार रिपुमर्दनः ॥

सः कदा चित् वनं राजा मृगयां निर्ययौ पुरात्saḥ kadā cit vanaṃ rājā mṛgayāṃ niryayau purātonce that king rode out from the city into the forest to hunt,

अनुवाद
Gandharva said: "There was in this world a king named Kalmashapada, born in the line of Ikshvaku, O Partha, unequaled in splendor on earth. Once that king rode out from the city into the forest to hunt and, slaying deer and boars, roamed about, the crusher of foes."

Here a king is introduced, glorious and mighty — and so much the bitterer will be his fall. It is significant that the story begins with a hunt: the chase, a kshatriya's pastime, more than once in the tradition becomes the prelude to disaster. Here it is shown that even the exalted and radiant are not safe from falling, if they have not mastered themselves. Thus the scripture reveals the beginning of a tragedy: behind the king's splendor lurks a pride that will bring on a terrible chain of misfortunes.
