स समुद्रम् अभिप्रेत्य शोकाविष्टो महामुनिः ॥
बद्ध्वा कण्ठे शिलां गुर्वीं निपपात तदम्भसि ॥
स समुद्रोर्मिवेगेन स्थले न्यस्तो महामुनिः ॥
जगाम स ततः खिन्नः पुनर् एवाश्रमं प्रति ॥

अनुवाद
"Then, hastening to the ocean, the great sage, seized by grief, bound a heavy stone to his neck and cast himself into its waters; but borne to dry land by the force of the ocean's waves, the great sage, downcast, went again toward his hermitage."

Here even the ocean refuses the saint's death, returning him to life and duty. It is telling that the waves carry him back to shore: nature itself commands him to live and bear his burden. Here is a lesson that one cannot escape what is ordained, and grief must be endured, not cast off by death; a willful departure from life is not permitted. It is telling that Vasishtha, failing to die, "goes again toward his hermitage" — he returns to life, to austerity, to duty. So the scripture shows that the righteous are given not to escape sorrow but to live through it and endure; and Vasishtha's return is an acceptance of the will of providence, however heavy the burden may be.
