अमन्यत स धर्मात्मा वसिष्ठं पितरं तदा ॥
जन्मप्रभृति तस्मिंश् च पितरीव व्यवर्तत ॥
स तात इति विप्रर्षिं वसिष्ठं प्रत्यभाषत ॥
मातुः समक्षं कौन्तेय अदृश्यन्त्याः परंतप ॥
तातेति परिपूर्णार्थं तस्य तन् मधुरं वचः ॥
अदृश्यन्त्य् अश्रुपूर्णाक्षी शृण्वन्ती तम् उवाच ह ॥
amanyata sa dharmātmā vasiṣṭhaṃ pitaraṃ tadā ||
janmaprabhṛti tasmiṃś ca pitarīva vyavartata ||
sa tāta iti viprarṣiṃ vasiṣṭhaṃ pratyabhāṣata ||
mātuḥ samakṣaṃ kaunteya adṛśyantyāḥ paraṃtapa ||
tāteti paripūrṇārthaṃ tasya tan madhuraṃ vacaḥ ||
adṛśyanty aśrupūrṇākṣī śṛṇvantī tam uvāca ha ||
'That righteous-souled boy honored Vasishtha as father and from birth behaved toward him as toward a father; he addressed him with the word "father" in his mother's presence. And hearing that sweet, meaning-laden word "father," Adrishyanti, with eyes full of tears, said to him.'

Here the innocent love of an orphan draws tears from his mother. It is telling that the child calls his grandfather 'father,' not knowing of his own father's death: a pure heart attaches itself to the one who nurtures it. Here is the tenderness of a child unaware of his loss, and the grief of a mother who keeps the memory of the departed. Thus the scripture shows a touching moment: the word 'father,' sweet to the child, wounds the mother, and she resolves to open the truth to him.
