ते भृगूणां धनं ज्ञात्वा राजानः सर्व एव ह ॥
याचिष्णवो ऽभिजग्मुस् तांस् तात भार्गवसत्तमान् ॥
भूमौ तु निदधुः के चिद् भृगवो धनम् अक्षयम् ॥
ददुः के चिद् द्विजातिभ्यो ज्ञात्वा क्षत्रियतो भयम् ॥
भृगवस् तु ददुः के चित् तेषां वित्तं यथेप्सितम् ॥
क्षत्रियाणां तदा तात कारणान्तरदर्शनात् ॥
te bhṛgūṇāṃ dhanaṃ jñātvā rājānaḥ sarva eva ha ||
yāciṣṇavo 'bhijagmus tāṃs tāta bhārgavasattamān ||
bhūmau tu nidadhuḥ ke cid bhṛgavo dhanam akṣayam ||
daduḥ ke cid dvijātibhyo jñātvā kṣatriyato bhayam ||
bhṛgavas tu daduḥ ke cit teṣāṃ vittaṃ yathepsitam ||
kṣatriyāṇāṃ tadā tāta kāraṇāntaradarśanāt ||
'Learning of the Bhrigus' wealth, all the kings, as supplicants, came to those best of the Bhargavas, child. Some Bhrigus buried their inexhaustible wealth in the ground, some gave it to the twice-born, fearing the kshatriyas; and some gave the wealth to the kshatriyas, as they desired, for other reasons.'

Here it is revealed how fear and calculation govern people in different ways. The distinction is telling: some Bhrigus hide their goods, others give them to their own, still others yield to the kshatriyas — each acts according to his own judgment and apprehension. Here it is seen that in the hour of threat different characters are revealed: some are cunning, others generous, others yielding. It is also telling that the concealment of wealth, born of fear, will [later] bring suspicion and disaster. Thus the scripture shows how mistrust between the classes ripens into strife; and the Bhrigus' varied responses prepare a fateful collision.
