ततस् ते मोघसंकल्पा भयार्ताः क्षत्रियर्षभाः ॥
ब्रह्मणीं शरणं जग्मुर् दृष्ट्यर्थं ताम् अनिन्दिताम् ॥
ऊचुश् चैनां महाभागां क्षत्रियास् ते विचेतसः ॥
ज्योतिःप्रहीणा दुःखार्ताः शान्तार्चिष इवाग्नयः ॥
भगवत्याः प्रसादेन गच्छेत् क्षत्रं सचक्षुषम् ॥
उपारम्य च गच्छेम सहिताः पापकर्मणः ॥
सपुत्रा त्वं प्रसादं नः सर्वेषां कर्तुम् अर्हसि ॥
पुनर् दृष्टिप्रदानेन राज्ञः संत्रातुम् अर्हसि ॥
tatas te moghasaṃkalpā bhayārtāḥ kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ ||
brahmaṇīṃ śaraṇaṃ jagmur dṛṣṭyarthaṃ tām aninditām ||
ūcuś caināṃ mahābhāgāṃ kṣatriyās te vicetasaḥ ||
jyotiḥprahīṇā duḥkhārtāḥ śāntārciṣa ivāgnayaḥ ||
bhagavatyāḥ prasādena gacchet kṣatraṃ sacakṣuṣam ||
upāramya ca gacchema sahitāḥ pāpakarmaṇaḥ ||
saputrā tvaṃ prasādaṃ naḥ sarveṣāṃ kartum arhasi ||
punar dṛṣṭipradānena rājñaḥ saṃtrātum arhasi ||
'Then those bull-like kshatriyas, whose designs had become vain, distressed by fear, went for refuge to the blameless brahmin woman for the sake of sight; and, deprived of light, like fires with quenched flames, they said to her, the greatly fortunate one: "By your grace, gracious one, may the kshatra become sighted again; and, turning away from evil, may we depart together, we who have done evil deeds. May you, together with your son, be pleased to show mercy to us all; by granting sight again, may you be pleased to save the kings."'

Here the killers, struck down by retribution, seek refuge in the mercy of those they destroyed. It is telling that the proud kshatriyas, having gone blind, come 'for refuge' to the brahmin woman and repent: 'we who have done evil deeds' — calamity crushes pride and leads to repentance. Here it is shown that even the hardened, overtaken by retribution, is capable of turning: suffering opens the path to repentance. Telling too is that they beg for mercy, promising to 'turn away from evil': refuge is sought together with a vow of amendment. Thus the scripture shows a turn from violence to a plea for mercy; and Vasishtha carries the tale toward how [Aurva's] wrath will be tamed — a lesson for Parashara as well.
