The rivals of the Pandavas -- the Kauravas together with Karna -- are named first here. A hidden contrast is telling: the hundred Kauravas sit proudly among the suitors, unaware that their cousins are right there, disguised as brahmins; the manifest and resplendent sit beside the concealed and humble. Here is the irony of fate: those who imagine themselves masters of the moment fail to notice the true chosen ones. Thus scripture shows the splendor of the Kauravas as the prelude to their humiliation; and among them, unrecognized, sit those to whom the prize will fall.
