देवनागरी
एते चान्ये च बहवो नानाजनपदेश्वराः ॥
त्वदर्थम् आगता भद्रे क्षत्रियाः प्रथिता भुवि ॥
एते वेत्स्यन्ति विक्रान्तास् त्वदर्थं लक्ष्यम् उत्तमम् ॥
विध्येत य इमं लक्ष्यं वरयेथाः शुभे ऽद्य तम् ॥

त्वदर्थम् आगताः भद्रे क्षत्रियाः प्रथिताः भुविtvadartham āgatāḥ bhadre kṣatriyāḥ prathitāḥ bhuvihave come for your sake, O gracious one, kshatriyas renowned on earth;
एते वेत्स्यन्ति विक्रान्ताः त्वदर्थं लक्ष्यम् उत्तमम्ete vetsyanti vikrāntāḥ tvadarthaṃ lakṣyam uttamamthese valiant ones will strike, for your sake, the excellent target;
विध्येत यः इमं लक्ष्यं वरयेथाः शुभे अद्य तम्vidhyeta yaḥ imaṃ lakṣyaṃ varayethāḥ śubhe adya tamwhoever pierces this target, him choose, O gracious one, today."

"These and many other lords of various countries, kshatriyas renowned on earth, have come for your sake, O gracious one. These valiant ones will strike, for your sake, the excellent target; whoever pierces this target, him choose, O gracious one, today."

Here the brother entrusts the maiden with the right to choose according to the outcome of the trial. It is telling that the choice is made to depend on a feat: not the splendor of lineage but the accomplished deed will mark out the worthy one. And in the custom of the svayamvara a truth shows through -- the highest is won by valor and merit, not by mere claim. Thus scripture shows the close of the roll-call and the turn toward the contest itself; and among all these celebrated kings, victory is destined for the one who sits unnoticed among the brahmins.
