वैशंपायन उवाच
यदा निवृत्ता राजानो धनुषः सज्यकर्मणि ॥
अथोदतिष्ठद् विप्राणां मध्याज् जिष्णुर् उदारधीः ॥
उदक्रोशन् विप्रमुख्या विधुन्वन्तो ऽजिनानि च ॥
दृष्ट्वा संप्रस्थितं पार्थम् इन्द्रकेतुसमप्रभम् ॥

अनुवाद
Vaishampayana said: "When the kings had given up trying to string the bow, Jishnu, noble in mind, rose up from among the brahmins; and the chief brahmins cried out, shaking their deerskins, seeing Partha step forward, shining like the banner of Indra."

Here the hidden hero steps forward from among the humble. It is significant that Arjuna rises "from among the brahmins": the greatest of warriors is shown first as one of the poor wanderers. Significant too is his radiance, "like the banner of Indra": his true nature shines through even his beggar's garb. Here it is shown that the chosen one's hour comes in its own time, and then what was hidden reveals itself. Thus the scripture shows the hero's rise from obscurity; and his stepping forward disturbs an assembly accustomed to see in him nothing but a brahmin.
