के चिद् आसन् विमनसः के चिद् आसन् मुदा युताः ॥
आहुः परस्परं के चिन् निपुणा बुद्धिजीविनः ॥
यत् कर्णशल्यप्रमुखैः पार्थिवैर् लोकविश्रुतैः ॥
नानतं बलवद्भिर् हि धनुर्वेदपरायणैः ॥
तत् कथं त्व् अकृतास्त्रेण प्राणतो दुर्बलीयसा ॥
बटुमात्रेण शक्यं हि सज्यं कर्तुं धनुर् द्विजाः ॥
ke cid āsan vimanasaḥ ke cid āsan mudā yutāḥ ||
āhuḥ parasparaṃ ke cin nipuṇā buddhijīvinaḥ ||
yat karṇaśalyapramukhaiḥ pārthivair lokaviśrutaiḥ ||
nānataṃ balavadbhir hi dhanurvedaparāyaṇaiḥ ||
tat kathaṃ tv akṛtāstreṇa prāṇato durbalīyasā ||
baṭumātreṇa śakyaṃ hi sajyaṃ kartuṃ dhanur dvijāḥ ||
"Some brahmins were troubled, others were joyful; and some, skillful, living by their wits, said to one another: 'That which the renowned, mighty kings headed by Karna and Shalya, devoted to the science of the bow, could not bend — how then can that bow be strung by one unskilled in arms, a feeble youth, O twice-born?'"

Here reason judges by appearance — and is deceived. Significant is the skeptics' doubt: if the mightiest kings could not do it, how could a thin young brahmin? — those who judge by outward form fail to perceive hidden power. In this lies the common error: a man is judged by his looks and rank, not by his true strength. Thus the scripture shows the shortsightedness of outward judgment; and the brahmins' doubt will soon be put to shame by Arjuna's deed.
