देवा ऊचुः
मर्त्या ह्य् अमर्त्याः संवृत्ता न विशेषो ऽस्ति कश् चन ॥
अविशेषाद् उद्विजन्तो विशेषार्थम् इहागताः ॥

Here the essence of the fear is laid bare: the distinction between the mortal and the god has been erased. It is telling that the gods are troubled by the loss of creation's rank: where there is no death, the boundary of order is effaced. Here it is shown that the harmony of creation rests on established distinctions, and their confusion is disorder. Thus scripture shows the meaning of "vishesha" [distinction]; and the need to restore it drives the divine design.
